about

The Sentimental Bloke is one of the jewels of Australia's surviving silent
cinema based on the verses of C.J. Dennis that were originally published as “The Songs Of A Sentimental Bloke”. Made in 1919 and directed by Raymond Longford, the film became a smash hit when released. It then disappeared without trace until 1953, when it was rediscovered by members of the National Library, having been housed in a temporary vault in Melbourne. Consequently it screened to enthusiastic acclaim at the 1955 Sydney Film Festival.

In 1993, a new print of the film was produced for the Australian New Zealand Focus at the Pordenone Silent Film Festival. I was then commissioned by ScreenSound Australia in conjunction with the Melbourne International Film Festival to write an original score to accompany the film at the 1995 opening night of the Melbourne International Film Festival. It was performed at the Astor Cinema, Melbourne, by myself and two mates from the folk-rock band ‘Weddings Parties Anything’ (Mick Thomas and Mark Wallace). A short performance season followed with a very warm response from audiences and critics alike before other commitments took me away from the project.

2004 sees the imminent release of the most definitive version of the film yet. Having been painstakingly re-constructed by ScreenSound Australia, the print is derived from new material found in America. It’s believed that this version is much closer to the film Raymond Longford completed in 1919 than previous ones. In celebration of this momentous achievement and because it’s high time I did so anyway, I’m proud to announce the coincidental release of this CD containing highlights from the score that I’ve written. I hope you enjoy the listen!
